In 1987 he established The Basil H. Alkazzi Award (USA) for young and emerging painters in America. Two years later in commemoration, The Sheldon Bergh Award (USA) was created for the best runner-up to the main award. The purpose of these awards was in essence to give the recipient a means to withdraw, re-nourish.
In short, the surface of Basil Alkazzi's images is like an invisible force-field, magnetizing whatever forms exist in it, until they seem strangely sublime. Dream Moment is a decisive example. A huge black square--related to Malevich's--is suspended in the lower half of a dark crimson field.

Basil Alkazzi studied at the Central School of Art in London and went on to live in multiple Western cities. Throughout, he has maintained a core sense of the spiritual and metaphysical in his work. Basil Alkazzi has regularly exhibited in London and in the United States since 1973. The artist is a prolific and compulsive painter and has recently also written and directed several short films.

Basil H. Alkazzi Award, Fulbright Scholarship Brian Christopher Rutenberg (born September 18, 1965, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) is an American abstract painter. Rutenberg received his BFA from the College of Charleston in 1987 and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1989.
